drbutterfossDr. Tom Butterfoss has been in private orthodontic practice since 1992. He has been in practice with his daughter, Dr. Jennifer Barton, since 2004. Dr. Butterfoss received his Bachelor’s and Doctor of Dental Medicine degrees from the University of Pennsylvania. After eight years of general practice, he returned to the University of Pennsylvania to complete his post-doctoral work in orthodontics. Dr. Butterfoss was Chief Mentor of Orthodontics for a post-graduate dental residency program at Fort Jackson. He has served as president of the University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association and the Tidewater Orthodontic Society, and was a delegate for the Virginia Dental Association. Dr. Butterfoss served 15 years on active duty as an Army dental officer and then 10 years in the Army reserves as a consultant to the Hampton VA Hospital Department of Dentistry. He is now serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthodontics at Virginia Commonwealth University.

Dr. Butterfoss is a member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the Southern Society of Orthodontists, the Tidewater Orthodontic Society, and the Peninsula Dental Society. He is a Board Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. He is also an active member of the Angle Orthodontic Society, an international orthodontic study club. 

His community activities has included coaching youth soccer and basketball and serving as committee chair for Boy Scout Troop 201. Dr. Butterfoss has served as a science fair judge for York County Public Schools. He is an active corporate sponsor for Relay for Life and serves on the boards of both the Yorktown Victory YMCA and they Gloucester Boys and Girls Club. He has been active in athletics all of this life. Dr. Butterfoss was a three time National Rowing Champion at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the 1972 Olympic team, and currently competes at the national level in the Masters Rowing category.

Dr. Butterfoss and his wife, Fran, have three children: Jennifer, Ryan and Adam and six grandchildren.
